The aged furniture look is again popular with many homeowners. Having a home in an antique style always comes and goes, but right now it's in again, so if you want to jump on the bandwagon, now it's the time to do it. There are many ways to achieve that aged furniture look in the room and you can play around by mixing it with some contemporary pieces, or some rustic or even regular, traditional furniture to give your room a unique look and feel to it.
One easy way to achieve that is by using paint. It brings out the creative process in all of us and many people find it quite interesting to play with the paints, just like when they were little children. However there are a few pointers that you need to be aware of when attempting to repaint your furniture.

First things first, you need to ensure proper ventilation. Then you need to have all the items ready to start being creative. Have some oil based primer, some latex paint, preferably in two contrasting colors, of course the paintbrushes, some rags, sandpaper and also paste wax.
Make sure that the furniture piece is clean before working on it. The first step is to apply the primer so that the paint will glue to the furniture properly. Wait until it is completely dry and then add the first coating of paint. Look for the wood grains and work in the same direction, not against them.
After one day, when the first coating has dried, apply a second coating and wait for it to dry again for another 24 hours. Once it is all dry, sand the waxed areas again going towards the grain. As wood has some irregular patterns in it, try to recreate a few of your own, it should be fun.
If you want to go even further, you can use a coating of brown stain on the top layer to give it an aged look. Use sand paper and then use a rag to wipe up any extra excess. And for a neat additional touch you can ad glaze to achieve the antique crackle look that many people especially like.
